Total Recall (2012)

I watched it a few months ago, not a horrible movie. Really dig Kate Beckinsdale as a baddie. Having seen the original dozens of times, (probably second only to Mad Max 2) I cringed as soon as his hand rang. Other callbacks were fun, too. Like the "two weeks" woman, human shield man, and, of course, the three breasted hooker. I don't find The Fall any worse than the alien atmosphere generator of the original.

Cool

Mill's Fleet Farm is open in Ankeny. Looks like I may have to go shopping. :) I heard it is their largest store yet.

Re Zimmerman, Rescue Ranger

So, that story sat around for a while. Could you imagine if five seconds after Obama's press conference on Friday, this story had broke? LOL would not begin to cover it.

Dinner pic

No, I'm not hunting over bait. :-)

Overheard in the office

Obama treats (some) Americans here just like he treats his ambassadors: if something bad happens, you are on your own. Stand your ground gets in the way, so it has to go.

What to say in a theater

Apparently, yell "FIRE," if you are Obama. "I could have been Trayvon." Holy shit. This is not going to end up well by any standard.

Fancy profiling

Chicago is going to try an experiment to notify possible shooters and victims of "gun" violence. It is profiling, but profiling backed up by sumdood a professor from Yale with a degree and shit. So the short story is that they are going to send a team of cops to gang members known cribs to tell them to not shoot people. Or else.

I'm a little confused, it sounds like they will also be warning the possible victims, too. That will go well- guy who is suspect with his peers getting a visit from the cops. Or maybe they will just warn people on the CTA with iPhones.

Hey, Eric

George Zimmerman's gun is not an AK47. Sending it to Mexico will not help to inflate the numbers of American guns recovered.

Added: Yes, I knew I would be a day late and a dollar short with the joke. That's what I get for sleeping in.

All the not* Zimmerman Riots

Seem to happen in states with may issue gun laws.

*Nothing to see here, move along. Entirely unrelated flash mobs and beatings of Hispanics and whites.

That's nice

BCM Mod1 grip. It feels all ergonomic and tacticool at the same time.

Snitch line

Getting my new stories collected to send into the Saint Trayvon tip line. It isn't like they need to be sent. Just make a post with Trayvon and other NSA words in it.

Speaking of stupid, The Rolling Stone put the Boston Bomber (and familial speedbump runner) on the cover. Because understanding. He had a tough childhood. Those meanies made him feel bad about being a Muslim, growing up in the shadow of 9/11.

Diversity pecking order

So the creepy ass-cracka contingent was correct? Trayvon was going Matthew Sheppard on George Zimmerman? (Other than the robbery aspect) I'll go out on a limb and say her statements just blew any chance of a civil rights case. Not that there was one to start with.

Interesting Kaboom

A 12.5 with a can kaboomed on the first shot using Hornady Superperformance ammo. Hornady recommends not using that ammo in anything less than a rifle gas system, with a special provision for surpressors. Barring a factory screwup, I see that as good advice. I do use a lot of Hornady products, but steer clear of of the specialty stuff.

Definitely reminds me of one of my 300 BLK load tests. One popped a primer in the pistol, with heavy ejector and extractor marks on two or three cases. Same load was fine in the carbine gas barrel. I've learned that I have to try the loads in the pistol first, then see if they work in the rifle.

Invert Zimmerman and Martin

An oldie but a goodie. A case covered by me and other gun bloggers last year.

TL;DR version: Progressive is upset that a black man defending himself in the inverse of the Zimmerman situation was tried. (by the local Democrat ;) prosecutor) Typical anti stand your ground nonsense, too. Funny, the jury in the Iowa case had the same result as in the Zimmerman case: not guilty. Of course, Lewis would have had a better result if the DM Register wasn't so rabidly anti gun that their initial story on the incident painted Lewis as some kind of insane street racer with a gun. As opposed to the truth- some poor guy driving home and dealing with two road raging goobers.

Urban Camo

Looks like we will be on vacation soon. In a third world may issue state with no reciprocity, period. I'm thinking my plan for buying a Che style t-shirt, only with George Zimmerman's face on it, would be a baaaaadd idea. (Or this one) Maybe we will all wear hoodies and carry a can of watermelon drink with skittles in it to blend in, instead. (The creepy ass cracker one is available in a hoodie.)

I think I will insist, if anything happens, that my life insurance goes towards the furthering of nationwide carry. It is like people have been rioting and shutting down freeways there. Of course, with the Hispanic majority there, the Zim T might be more appropriate.

Zimmerman not guilty

Good. Sounds like the jury realized the whole trial was a political joke.

Self control

I have successfully not purchased a barrel that I want for over 24 hrs. I'm thinking, at this point, I need to look into turning my own barrel in a really oddball caliber like 10mm or 45 Auto. Or just settle down and shoot the hell out of what I currently have.

Intern earns progressive stripes

By punking a Fox News affiliate with the fake names of the landing challenged flight crew. Wonder if Louis Lerner is asking for that intern to be assigned to her specifically?

Maybe if I didn't suck at some of the levels it appears in, I wouldn't find it to be such an earworm.

Ejection

Ran 60 rounds through the pistol. Most were 150 grain Hornady fmj boat tails over 16.5/16.6 grains of H110 and Remington 6 1/2 primers. Fun load to shoot, might be warm in the pistol but they also work in the rifle. Switching to the non magnum primer seems to help, at the risk of slam fires, unfortunately. Maybe the cci 400s would be a better choice.

The ejection pattern was different than the 130 grain load. Closer to 3:30 vs the 4:30 position of the lighter bullets. Consistent though.

Since the load works well, I turned into that guy. Bought out Bass Pro Shops bullet stock. Now I have 800 bullets to play with. And I scored 22lr, too! Mostly to restore what we shot last weekend

Kangaroo court

Now the persecutors want to charge Zimmerman with child abuse for hurting Trayvon's fists while he was beating Zimmerman. Are the persecutors actually online trolls, too?

300 thru this 300

Between Saturday and today, the 300 BLK pistol has roughly 300 rounds through it. I'd say the rifle has around 500 through it. Target below is from sighting in a new optic at 25 yards, then, um, rapid magazine unloading via the barrel. Still the 30-30 bullet load, runs like a sewing machine. I even tried a Gen3 PMag loaded to 30 rounds. I need to try the 20 rounders again, now that it has the H2 buffer. Maybe they will feed better with the slightly slower bolt speed.

My wife ate this thing up Saturday. Even with all the pistol oddities, she liked it better than the rifle. She did prefer the subsonic loads, though.

I think it may need a Magpul K2 grip or a BCM mod1 or similar.

9 lives

Found our (formerly) male cat, Oz, sitting on the table yesterday. Kept shooing him off, he would return. I didn't put too much into it. Made breakfast, and went to throw something away. Out pops Ruby, the other cat. She had jumped into the open trash container cabinet and it closed on her. Guess Oz is no Lassie.

Welcome to America, subjects of the land of Lincoln

Now, let's work on nationwide reciprocity. Since citizens of other states have their rights abridged by stepping over an arbitrary line.

Top Gear

Just about the only good thing about (formerly) Great Britain these days. Even old reruns are worth watching. This season, I learned about the Morgan 3 Wheeler, for example.

The fact that it does donuts is just icing on the cake. Not that I can afford one.  Jeremy Clarkson must hate it, because normally they make a point of shoving him into the smallest cars. I was hoping that he would, because he has a similar build to me, so I can tell immediately if I would fit or not.

Video from the range trip

First, the pictures. So you can see what I was shooting at. All we thought to bring was the iPhone. Yes, my pump form sucks ass. I'm not impressed with the extraction/ejection of this 870 and the crappy tin base shells. Ran great with Rio buck and Remington slugs.

I did tag the Angry Bird with my 1911 a few times, and some buck tagged it,too.
Doh! Take off the safety first. More ejecting problems, same crappy shells.
At least the slugs work right.

That made a huge difference

Finally got some AA1680. (Thanks to my wife, no less) That stuff rules for subsonic 300 BLK. Even with the heavy buffer, it locked back at 11.2 grains, magnum or regular primers. Carbine or pistol. The 150 grain loads worked in either pistol or rifle with H110 loaded to 16.6 to 16.8 grains and regular primers.

Illinois new carry permit application

After the amenditory veto by Illinois Governor Quinn, I think I found a copy of the new application for a carry permit.

Reads about right to me, even written by Democrats in the past.

2x Range notes

Why 2x? I went twice today. Duh.

A load that the 16" runs fine popped a primer in the 8.5" 300 BLK. Ejector marks on that case, ruined it. Other primers looked flat. Reduced the load, runs fine in the 8.5 other than slightly flattening the primers. But, in the 16" gun the reduced load doesn't lock back. Damn you, timing and gas tube lengths. Tried an H2 buffer* and it seemed to tame the pistol on supersonic factory loads.

Also broke out a Mosin today. That is all, no problems with it, hits the target even without the bayonet attached (Sacrilege! I know)

Found an H3 locally, took it down and made an H1 and H2 buffer from another spare.

S.E.G.

300 BLK subsonic from a pistol at 7 yards is just too damn much fun.

Now if I could just get the right powder to make my own- H110 is not right for subs, AA1680 is supposed to be the best, but I can't find any right now. Of the test rounds I loaded with different powder charges, all of them ejected and locked back on the bolt carrier, but not the bolt itself. Some of the Hornady factory stuff did that today, depending on the mag.

Also scored like 60 .223 cases from the brass bucket.

All in all, a good day at the range.
