Some pissant in Ames (college town) whined enough to get the city council to try to pass a ban on home sales of firearms. Little problem. They can't legally do that. Of course, with the anti-gun Attorney General we they keep electing in this state, it will fall to the governor to fix it.

Different topic- I notice when regular media writers and/or activists mascarading as journalists (but I repeat myself) blog, they refer to a solitary post as a 'blog' as opposed to a 'post,' when all they have is basically a weekly or even irregular posting schedule, usually based on the propaganda story of the moment.

OMGWTFBBQ

This is actually about BBQ. Or, more importantly, pulled pork. The last 3 weeks I've been trying different pulled pork or chicken abominations recipes.  Some have been better than others. In fact, last weeks chicken would have made a fine chili with just a bit of tomato and a slight reduction in vinegar. This week, it was:

2 lbs boneless pork rib
1/2 lb bacon for flavor
2 pineapple kiddie size cups- my son won't eat them, to I used them to line the bottom of the crock pot
1 cup Stubbs Bourbon Hickory BBQ sauce
1 packet Lipton mushroom+onion soup powder
Brown sugar
Chili 9000

I put the pineapple in the bottom of the crock pot, put the pork on top of that. Mixed the BBQ sauce and soup, poured it on top of the ribs. Layered the bacon to cover the BBQ sauce mix, then covered that with brown sugar and topped with Chili 9000. 10 - 11 hours on low. Do what you want with the bacon- I ate it to get to the pork ;) Most of the pineapple was discarded, the rest mixed with the juice to cover the pulled pork.

Interesting article on the gun culture 2.0. I'll just share my day today. Went out for breakfast with Ace and one of his friends (and family) who builds ARs as a hobby, and owns a knife store. The only one of 5 unarmed at our table was the 3 year old. Ace and I span Gen X, his friend and spouse are very late gen X/ early Gen Y.

Surprise while cleaning my rifle

While I was cleaning out and organizing the range bag, I mixed up 2 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF and 5w20 synthetic oil, with a little Marvel Mystery air tool oil added on top. I like how the AR's have been running on what little I made last time. This much should last years.

CSGV latest screed for Constitution Day

Fisk time! Josh Horwitz of the Coalition to Stop (only) Gun Violence has a new post on his Huffington Post blog.

National Rifle Association (NRA) board member and aged rocker Ted Nugent made national headlines in April when his threats against President Obama and Democrats earned him a visit from the Secret Service. But he has taken recently to uttering another mantra that is equally disturbing and revealing. At a concert in Forth Worth on August 25, Nugent told the crowd, "The whole world sucks. America sucks less." It was at least the fourth time in the last year he's publicly shared this derogatory opinion about the United States.

So, Josh thinks America sucks more. Good to know.

Nugent's remarks got me thinking about a seldom discussed but critical aspect of the modern pro-gun movement: Its total lack of faith in the system of government established by our Founders in the U.S. Constitution. It is that profound lack of faith -- more than anything -- that is responsible for the insurrectionist ideology ("Second Amendment remedies") that fuels the movement.

More like lack of faith in the people who populate said government. Power hungry fools from both sides of the aisle seem to be attracted to the authority government provides.

Pro-gun leaders like NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre would have us believe that "the guys with the guns make the rules" in our democracy.[Hell, even the Department of Education has a SWAT team.] But nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, our Founders ratified the Constitution to obviate the need for political violence. The very first line of the document reads as follows: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." The Founders were telling the world that this brilliant new system of government -- this social compact -- would secure individual rights on a scale previously unknown in the civilized world. They protected liberty not by creating a libertarian society where every citizen was in it solely for himself, but by establishing a strong, energetic government and stressing civic responsibility.

And the states required  amendments before agreeing to ratify the Constitution. Why? Because they had just fought a war against a petty tyrant and wanted to limit the power of the newly formed Republic.

In the face of this history and the plain terms of the Constitution itself, it is amazing to see modern insurrectionists like Judge Roy Moore, the controversial former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice, write things like, "Liberty and freedom are gifts of God, and not the government. The means by which we secure those gifts are ultimately in the hands and the 'arms' of the people." It's as if Moore is totally unaware of all the robust protections for individual rights spelled out in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. [As does Horowitz]The idea of liberty may be a "gift of God," but the Framers knew it could only be safeguarded if a robust government was in place to arbitrate private disputes and guarantee that each citizen has an equal voice in the affairs of the nation. Furthermore, what spurred the drafting of the Constitution was a fear that "licentiousness" -- freedom taken to excess -- was the greatest threat to individual liberty!

He said God! Doesn't he know we all BELONG to the government. The government needs robust limits on what it can do.

Nonetheless, Moore is far from alone in his belief that only private violence can be trusted to "secure the Blessings of Liberty." At the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Wayne LaPierre told those in attendance:

Their laws don't work, their lies don't ring true ... Government has failed us with our money and our financial institutions. It has failed in running our post offices and trains. It has failed in enforcing our immigration laws, our drug laws, and our laws against violent criminals with guns. Heck, they can barely get the snow plowed ... By its lies and laws and lack of enforcement, government policies are getting us killed and imprisoning us in a society of terrifying violence.

In LaPierre's world, it's as if the U.S. government never fostered the most powerful economy in the world, or put Neil Armstrong on the moon, or won two world wars, or built a national system of highways, or prevented generations of senior citizens from living out their final years in poverty, etc., etc. And the system of justice spelled out in the Constitution? The NRA has completely given up on it. Bill of Rights protections? Worthless. The courts? Can't trust 'em. In Personal Firepower We Trust.

That flag he is wearing is wrapped pretty tight.

Perhaps most disturbing are the endless attempts to conflate our constitutional republic with some of the most brutal and inhumane dictatorships in human history (try Googling "gun control Hitler" sometime). Recently, when my organization, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, asked National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) General Counsel Larry Keane if he felt that individual Americans had a right to shoot and kill government officials in response to what they personally perceived as "tyranny," Keane tweeted back at us plaintively, "Just like the Jews in the ghettos of Warsaw? The South Sudanese? Kurds? The American colonists?"

Boy, he really doesn't like the fact that gun control is the preferred tool of fascist dictators worldwide. Every time genocide occurs, it is preceded by taking away the means of defense from the victims.

Keane makes an important, but unintended, point. Countries that kill their own citizens are not democracies. As political scientist R.J. Rummel noted in his 1997 book, Power Kills: Democracy as a Method of Nonviolence, nations with strong democratic institutions do not murder their own citizens. A more recent study by Christian Davenport and David A. Armstrong II examined this conclusion statistically and found, "Democratic political systems have been found to decrease political bans, censorship, torture, disappearances and mass killing, doing so in a linear fashion across diverse measurements, methodologies, time periods, countries, and contexts." Well-developed democracies are the most effective means of preventing public and private violence, and the U.S. Constitution -- to this day -- remains the template for free societies.

How does he breathe with the flag tied that tightly? I'm getting concerned here.

Last year, the NRA criticized a blog I had written here at the Huffington Post in a column in their flagship magazine, America's 1st Freedom ("Fear and Loathing Post Tucson," May 2011). For believing in the system of government established by the Constitution, I was compared to Timothy Treadwell, who was killed by a grizzly bear after spending 13 summers around these creatures in Alaska. "Horwitz' fantasy that government can and will safeguard us from the brutal excesses of the state of nature reminds me of another individual who thought the designs of man -- in this case not the constructs of government, but the human values of compassion and fraternity -- could keep the brutality of the world at bay," wrote NRA editor Blaine Smith.

Not sure about that comparison to the bear chow guy. Is Horowitz out on the streets, taking guns away from gang members personally? Or is he just advocating the government do it for him? Wait, he is more concerned with legally owned guns.

Except it wasn't my fantasy that the "constructs of government... could keep the brutality of the world at bay." It was the fantasy of our Founders who traveled to Philadelphia in May of 1787 to correct the deficiencies in the Articles of Confederation and establish a new system of government that could "insure domestic tranquility" and "secure the Blessings of Liberty." And while the NRA and the pro-gun movement might have absolutely no faith in their wisdom and foresight, most Americans still do.

 That is one was to celebrate Constitution day- wrap yourself in the very thing you find in the way the other 364 days of the year. He did mention the Bill of Rights once, but almost by accident. In a way that seemed to defend violent criminals with guns.

Felt the urge yesterday

To run my poor, neglected 16" AR. All my reloads ran fine in it and in the 11.5. Put around 200 downrange. It now wears a MOE grip. Think I like the feel better than the MOE+ on the 6.8. Did not have them side by side to compare. Maybe next time.

Defensive Gun Use in New Jersey

Police say the pharmacist, identified as Dr. John Agyemang, distracted the suspect by telling him there was someone entering the store. While the suspect turned around, Agyemang ran to the back of the store and got his gun, according to police.

The only 2 things I can fault. One, off body carry. Two, shooting outside the store at a fleeing suspect. Strangely, the New Jersey cops were cool with it, at least according to the video. Now, if it turns out the Goblin was firing back, fault point two is invalidated.

I wish there was better video. What little I have seen of the suspect, he's a dude dressed in drag to disguise himself from the camera. I seem to remember a little song that would go perfectly with a criminal running away.....

Rights all too willing to be thrown under the bus

Remember who spoke out the loudest to throw our rights under the bus, as it comes out that the fake Egypt "anger" was planned as a diversion, to distract from the very real attack in Libya. Funny, a large portion of those wanting to cut our rights to speech and enforce Sharia in this country are using the same arguments made FOR gun control. Yeah, I get to go there- not the most inflammatory thing I've ever said here. The ever popular  '"We need [x] regulated because someone might be offended by [x]" is the argument for gun control, with x=guns instead of x=speech.

So, as more "spontaneous" demonstrations appear, will other very real attacks happen? I'd be surprised if the didn't. I'd guess a European one, just because that would appear all the more 'shocking' to the anti-rights people.

So why did I tweet that Bacile should be in jail? The "free speech" in Bacile's film is not about expressing a personal opinion about Islam. It denigrates the religion by depicting the faith's founder in several ludicrous and historically inaccurate scenes to incite and inflame viewers.

First Amendment Under Attack

Now I'm getting good and pissed off. I mentioned it in a previous post, but want to repeat it here. Fascist morons who want the government to prosecute people for what they say about one religion are in fact making the offended religion the state religion.

Now, if the media and government employees* can stop worrying about what some Coptic Christians and Terry Jones did (nothing illegal) and notice that killing an Ambassador is a pretty serious deal. It looks like all Jones did was meet with the filmmakers once. Shit, it's a trifecta! Freedom of association attacked, too.

 It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out the "Muslim Outrage" is just a cover for standard terrorism. Just that the criminals who enjoy taking rights away have no problem assigning blame to their favorite "hate" groups. In this case, anyone who isn't involved with Islam.]

Some seem to be online, spamming websites with their cases. Somehow, in a Democrat controlled city, in a Democrat controlled state, the Republicans seem to be at fault for all of it. One comment: ZOMG RAHMBO is to the right of the Republicans on this school issue!!11!one!!*

One thing is for sure: The students are not getting any worse an education by not having teachers there. 58% graduation rate? Why bother?

One thing I've noticed, much of the partisan Chicago media seems to side with the mayor. Interesting. Trying to curry favor, I'd wager. Usually, journalists have never met a strike they didn't like. Or the whole thing is just political theater to set Obama up as some kind of mediator. I don't know if I subscribe to that theory, myself.

I get a phone call yesterday

My son got in trouble after school. He bit one of the kids in daycare. Now, when he was younger, he did bite, never broke the skin. I thought he had grown out of it. So did my wife. So she asked him:

"Why did you bite your friend?"

Son: "We were playing zombies. I wanted her to be a zombie with me, so I bit her like zombies do."

At least he is a stickler for realism.

It sucks when your media monopoly implodes around you

Some whiner at Slate bellyaches about the ability of new media to report what actually happens. Reads more like, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Funny, now CNN is a conservative new media outlet, too. Because they covered booing God and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz's bumbling statements about it. How dare people fact check Democrats, or even dare to repeat their statements! That is deviating from the official party line given to us by The Won!

That was strange

I came back from the range with 2 more Fiocchi .223 cases than I shot. Haven't quite figured that one out. All the cases are prepped, loaded with either Remington or Hornaday 55 grain FMJ. 25 grains of Win748 and CCI450 primers, just like I have been using before.

The Fiocchi cases didn't require a lot of force in resizing. Flash holes are mostly off center. Primers didn't seem to be crimped very hard, or at all. New primers slid in firmly, but smoothly. Unlike the '10' marked Lake City brass that seems to be impossible to remove the crimp on without a power tool. Even then I feel like I am destroying the stuff. And I found some PSD brass that I just threw out. That stuff is not worth my time to fight. I need to stock up on the Remington brass. It seems easy to reload without the pain the ass work the other brands require. Planning to get some dedicated brass for hunting rounds, and leave the plinking stuff for practice.

Maybe. Why not? Nosler 60 grain are good down to 1600 FPS. It seems accurate. Lighter bullets might be good for squirrel. Though I'm afraid all I will find are bits and pieces. Coyotes. I'm also thinking longer barreled upper for prairie dogs and the like in the future.

Weak ammo

Shot a few through the M&P 9 yesterday. From the Winchester white box 115 grain crap sold at Wallyworld. The gun locked back maybe two times on empty mags. The empties barely fell out of the gun, most landed at my feet. Dropped in some Ranger ammo, worked perfectly. Even the brass itself looked like ass, head stamps were terrible. Might save the rest of the box for failure drills- load a couple in the bottom of each mag, then good stuff on top. Good practice and a reason to not marry yourself to using the slide lock on reloads.

I forgot how much fun .357 Sig is to shoot. Now, that stuff always flew and cycled like it should.

Oh, I forgot to thank Ace for letting me keep his .40 brass. I'll have to make him some reloads some day, as I still have his tumbler......

Less JD post 6

Or so. Weight loss hasn't been as fast as before- less to lose. I'll call it 45 lbs lost. I'd been hovering around 209 for weeks. Today I was under 208 (206 or so) but I'm comfortable calling it 208. The vacation to Chicago didn't help much. Shot up to 219, but was back down to 213 within a few days. I did lose a pants size while going from 213 down to 208. Pants that I could not button in March, I can now remove without unhooking the button. Poor belt has gone from holding me in to holding my pants on. On its third extra hole. I refuse to buy a new one until I'm ready.

Added: Whoops, forgot to take down the safety flag. Ace and I had the range to ourselves, so we were checking targets after each string. Bad shooter. I was worried people would come up while we were down range, not that this backstop is very far away.

Range trip

Went shooting with Ace. I should never hand him my guns. He makes them look like bullseye pistols.

 Not sure what he is pointing out here, think it was a g27 group. The top right left was his group with my M&P 357. Full house carry load. Even his LCP group was tight. For an LCP. Or he is pointing out one of his groups with the AR. He did shoot it semi rested once. He's a better rifleman than me, too.

Shot about 170 through the fugly painted gun. Not all in a row, but all mags shot fairly quickly- over 15 minutes or less. No paint burned off. Got the barrel up to 300 degrees. Non-contact thermometer. The MOE handguard was around 140, that may been from the sun. 100 Fiocchi. Shot great. Buy more will I. Also ran some reloads, and new S&B that the 11.5 doesn't like and won't lock back on. The gun ran perfect on some Tula 55 grain I had laying around. Go figure.




We shot both targets, anyway, I did, with the AR. Sometimes back and forth. And sometimes, I'll admit, just shot the gun in the general direction of the targets to get the job done.

Lawsuit over Aurora Theater shooting

Too bad the article doesn't mention the gun free zone aspect anywhere in it. If the theater wants to ban patrons from lawful carry, they should have more of a responsibility to provide security. Unfortunately, states aren't held responsible for the deaths of people in state legislated gun free zones. Government can choose to not be sued, unlike private businesses.

So WTF was Recoil magazine anyway?

Guess it sounds like something I don't need to read. Apparently the editor of the magazine doesn't care or understand the Second Amendment very well. He either quoted or embellished a statement from H&K that states:

"Like we mentioned before, the MP7A1 is unavailable to civilians and for good reason. We all know that’s technology no civvies should ever get to lay their hands on. This is a purpose-built weapon with no sporting applications to speak of. It is made to put down scumbags, and that’s it. Mike Cabrera of Heckler & Koch Law Enforcement Sales and veteran law enforcement officer with SWAT unit experience points out that this is a gun that you do not want in the wrong, slimy hands. It comes with semi-automatic and full-auto firing modes only. Its overall size places it between a handgun and submachine gun. Its assault rifle capabilities and small size make this a serious weapon that should not be taken lightly."

Let' also review why this gun should not be taken lightly. In the article it was stated that the MP7A1 is a slightly larger than handgun sized machine-gun that can be accurately fired and penetrate Soviet style body armor at more than 300 yards. In the wrong hands, that's a bad day for the good guys.

As readers of RECOIL, we all agree that we love bad-ass hardware, there's no question about that. I believe that in a perfect world, all of us should have access to every kind of gadget that we desire. Believe me, being a civvie myself, I'd love to be able to get my hands on an MP7A1 of my own regardless of its stated purpose, but unfortunately the reality is that it isn't available to us. As a fellow enthusiast, I know how frustrating it is to want something only to be denied it.

Its manufacturer has not made the gun available to the general public and when we asked if it would ever come to the commercial market, they replied that it is strictly a military and law enforcement weapon, adding that there are no sporting applications for it. Is it wrong that HK decided against selling a full-auto pocket sized machine gun that can penetrate armor from hundreds of yards away? It's their decision to make and their decision they have to live with not mine nor anybody else's.

I accepted their answer for what it was out of respect for those serving in uniform. I believe that we as gun enthusiasts should respect our brothers in law enforcement, agency work and the military and also keep them out of harms way. Like HK, I wouldn't want to see one of these slip into the wrong hands either. Whether or not you agree with this is fine. I am compelled to explain a point that I was trying to make that may have not been clear.

1: Screw you and the sporting purposes clause. Hell, the NFA requires A MILITARY APPLICATION, and that is how the Supreme Court ruled once on short barreled shotguns. Something that actually does have a military application. The Second Amendment is not about hunting.

2: Due to the Hughes Amendment, HK can't sell it to non only ones. So they have no choice.

3: Pretty sure most rifles made into pistols can punch holes in armor, what is so special about a 4.6x30?

Another NYPD civilian shooting

An officer shot one of the victims in a robbery. The two workers were running from the goblins, and one ran right at an officer. The officer may have shot as or because the guy ran into him. I haven't decided from watching the video. I do know one thing from watching the video- no way in hell I'd be a clerk and not pack heat. If you are going to be shot, it might as well be defending yourself from criminals. At least the police won't have to feel bad about shooting you on accident- be it mistaking you for a perp or a negligent discharge. Heck, in Iowa you are allowed to pack at work without a carry permit.

Of course, in Sullivan Law equipped Bloomberg-dice, only the well connected, very rich, and criminals have guns. All exactly as the law was intended. Criminals having guns was the original intent of the law. No wonder NYC doesn't prosecute out of state people too hard. The Supreme Court might pimpslap them back to 1911.

I wonder what prior charges the former honor students* have had in the past. Shitbags don't start out with armed robbery.

Figured out how to add all the "new features" to the blog. Just take a shit on the layout and start over. At least you don't lose most of the old garbage added over time. Glad I don't have ads to worry about.

Grrr, brick and mortar shopping...

Hit or miss today. Grabbed some Fiocchi .223, I am curious about how they shoot and how well the cases reload. I was also out on the far side of town, stopped to see what Sheels had in stock for reloading/ammo. They were sold out of the cheap 500 count 55 grain bullets they had the last time. I knew I should have stocked up.

Didn't even do a Shield check while I was there. Rumor has it they keep one as a teaser. I should talk to one of my (2nd) cousins- turns out she works for Sheels in the firearms department. Appraisals or something. One of those cousins you see every 5 years or so. Yeah, guns tend to run in the family....

Heh, to think I've been censoring myself

My wife didn't even notice the pictures of the rifle when she did her daily check of my bs blog. I was expecting at least a "WTF did you do that for?" Guess it is like what she says about my vehicles: if it doesn't sound like crap, do whatever you want to the damn thing.

Amateur gun refinishing

Yeah, I got a bug in my butt the other day. I never quite liked the OD green of the Magpul stuff vs the OD green of the Armalite stock. All the pictures of the spray painted rifles gave me a solution to my problem. So, first, the before:

With FDE, Black, and OD PMags for comparison. Paint still isn't dry. And I think the pistol grip needs a little brown added to it on the right side. Didn't do the carry handle, at least not yet.

Now, the handguard was kinda fun. Can't just paint a rifle, you have to make it your own:

Yes, I totally went there. Hacked some flame shapes into a plastic sheet (all 6 are different) and spritzed some dayglo orange in there. Then shot some khaki/brown over that to dull it down. The camera flash really makes it pop. I know, the flames should be on the top vents. How in the hell are you supposed to see them from the sides if you do it that way? ;)
